Want to hear a funny story?

Some time back a customer wanted a refund because the strategies I teach weren't anything like what the dot com businesses are doing.

Now, most of them are going under and we're still making money.

Most people look in the wrong place for success. They think they need "new information" and "killer strategies" to make money.

Here's what you need: A hot product, a traffic stream and a sales letter.

If you're tired of long-winded Internet marketing b.s. that sounds good but doesn't work when you try it, click here for something simple that really works.

Most of the books I ever read on how to write sales letters and ad copy sucked.

There were a few good ones by John Caples, Claude Hopkins and Robert Collier.

But those books were written a long time ago.

So what I did is both simple and obvious. I collected successful sales letters, both online and offline, and studied them.

I read them over and over.

I marked out the thought flow and the psychology. I read them aloud. I can actually quote entire parts of some sales letters. After ten years of trial-and-error learning, it all started making sense.

Eventually, I became a highly paid copywriter. Then I decided to make life a lot easier for those who wanted to craft their own sales letters and marketing messages.

So I boiled everything down into a formula anyone can use. It's so simple, it's deceptive. If you don't have ten or twenty years to spend learning how to write sales letters, then check out this web site.

Gimme My Money Now Tip
Why I don't "do" the search engines
Call me crazy.

But I don't do jack in terms of getting listed on the search engines.

Maybe that'll change in the future. I doubt it.

Here's my rationale:

1. The search engines are taking longer and longer to spider your pages. It's a month or so before you know IF your strategy worked.

2. By the time you create those killer doorway pages, submit them and get them spidered, the rules and tricks have changed.

3. When you search on any of the key words relevant to Internet marketing, you get about 10,000,000 pages. That's a lot of competition. If you have a business with a small number of listings under your key words, the engine game may make sense for you.

4. Most of the software programs I've seen that are supposed to work never made me a dime.

6. It's complicated. Some products on the topic take hundreds of pages to explain the strategies. And in many cases by the time they're written, they either don't work or the rules have changed.

I do have friends who do extremely well in the search engines. But I've never personally been able to make money that way.

7. Pay per click engines like Go To are the wave of the future. And it's simple to buy traffic and make a profit if you know your monetization numbers. But even then, I have much more success with another strategy

8. In short, it's a slow way to make money that requires more skill than the average person has.

In contrast, I teach a simple method that has made my clients and friends big chunks of cash within 30 days of implementing it.

Click here for a simple strategy that takes only 50 pages to explain and, best of all, it really works.

Here's a very simple way to make money from your web site.

1. Select from our wide assortment of "exit popups." These are little pages that pop up only when people have decided NOT to buy from you and to leave your web site.

Why not cash in on these "leavers" or your "exit traffic?" They've already decided NOT to buy from you.

2. All you do is put the code on your web page. It's cut and paste. When people leave your web site, we'll pop them with an offer for one of our products.

3. When they buy, you get half! Once a month we send you a check for half. You get half our business.

I'm not going to pretend that creating your own products is always easy or fast.

But for most people I believe it is a good decision. And with the methods I teach, you can minimize the hassle and risk and maximize your profits.

Why create your own products? Because only then can you start an associate program and have hundreds or thousands of people promoting your products for you.

So instead of being on the bottom of the food chain selling other people's products, you can be on the top with other people selling your products.

Now creating products and running a reseller program isn't for everyone. It's a lot of work sometimes.

But the rewards are worth it.

I'm not knocking reseller programs. Each month I mail out thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars of checks to my resellers.

But if you want to make money the way I make money, then I recommend you check out How to Create Your Own Products In A Flash.

The term "free publicity" isn't accurate.

There is always a cost to obtain publicity. First, you have to write your press release. Second you have to distribute it.

But the upside is that it's a way to promote your business with limited competition. Most of your competitors aren't exploiting this method at all.

And if you educate yourself on publicity methods, it's a relatively low cost channel with big potential payoffs.

Here's a strategy taught by Elaine Floyd in our Secrets of Publicity course. What you do is write a tip sheet.

First you identify and quantify a problem. You put some hard numbers to it. Then you quote yourself or someone on your staff as saying what a big problem it is.

Then comes the paydirt. You present 3 to 6 tips for solving the problem.

My experience is these tip sheets are great for magazines. They don't work well to Business Wire or PRNewswire.

But if you fax a tip sheet like this to magazines, you can get some great press. You can fax out the press release via your computer. Or hire a service to do it for you inexpensively.

The payoff is that you reference your web site in the tip sheet. Can you say the word "traffic boost?"

For more details on this and other publicity strategies that work, click here.

Here's a very simple way to get publicity for your products, services and web site inexpensively.

All you do is type up a press release and pay as little $75.00 to have it distributed via an online wire service similar to Business Wire, PrNewswire, and so forth.

Now, that's the current price I pay in Dallas, TX. I'm sure it varies by city. And is subject to increase.

But here's what's so cool about it. Your press release will be streamed all across the Internet on web sites that stream news headlines.

The first release I did got on Yahoos! Finance section and my hit counter started spinning like a fan! For 75 bucks it was the cheapest traffic I've ever had.

That's the good news. The bad news is a journalist called and complained because they said my release was too commercial. That's what I was told anyway.

So I hired three professional writers to write press releases for me and the distribution service I used would only accept one of the three releases. They said the others were too commercial.

I don't know if it was simply bad luck or if my account got flagged or something because of the complaint.

However, the one release I did get out got me a call from the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association. They asked me to speak at one of their events.

I got another call from a gentleman with a 10 million name opt-in list. He wanted to do a joint venture.

For my money, getting publicity from magazines using the tip sheet strategy Elaine teaches in our publicity course is a much easier way to go.

But the online wire services are virtually instant. From the time you write your release to the time it comes out is only 30 minutes or so.

If you study the press releases on the wire services and write releases in that vein, and if you become an expert on the strategy, the sky could be the limit.

I did discover what I believe is the secret of getting accepted on the wire services. And I found another wire service I'm going to test out. I'm told they are not so stringent.

Beginner's Computer Tip
Do you know these email terms?
All those 'technical terms' explained!

ADDRESS BOOK: A program that contains your saved email addresses. Instead of typing in a new address each time, you can use it straight from the address book.

ATTACHMENT: A file received along with an email letter. The attachment can be one of many things. They are usually images, however they can also be programs, or documents.

BCC: Blind Carbon Copy. When you want to send a copy of an outgoing email to someone other than the person in the To: field, but you don't want the original recipient to know you sent the copy to someone else, use the BCC: field.

CC: Carbon Copy. When you want to send a copy of an outgoing email to someone other than the person in the To: field. When using CC: the original recipient can easily see they were not the only ones you sent the email to.

FILTER: A predeterminded designation for certain email messages, usually a folder you have created. You can filter messages based on the following: To: From: Subject: Body: CC: And More!

FORWARD: If you want to send someone an email you received, simply use your "forward" button. The email will usually be sent as a quotation, as opposed to regular text.

INBOX: Where all your new, and incoming email messages are stored.

OUTBOX: Where your outgoing email messages reside before they are sent.

POP: Post Office Protocol

QUOTATION: When replying to an email, the original message is usually included in quotations. Example:

>Hi, how are you?
>It's been a long time since we spoke!

QUEUED: Messages which are ready to be sent next time you hit the "Send" button.

RECIPIENT: The person you are sending the email to, entered in the To: field. Also, you can include recipients in the CC: and BCC: fields as well.

REDIRECT: Enables you to send an email you received to someone else.

REPLY: Your response to an email you already received.

SIGNATURE: A bit of text included at the bottom of an outgoing email. Usually includes your name, email address, and sometimes your web site address if you have one.

Managing your email can be a daunting task.

Here's a tip to make your life a lot easier: Get a full-featured email program. Several popular ones are Microsoft Outlook, Eudora and Pegasus.

Most of my friends use Outlook. People in the corporate world tend to use. While I love many features of Outlook, there are a few things Eudora does that I prefer. So I use it.

Here's a trick you can do in Eudora that you can't in most "lite" version email programs.

1. Right click on any email.

2. Select "make label" from the popup menu.

3. Select a color.

Now that email appears in your in box with a color. I make all my action emails one color. Important things to read another color. Just by scrolling through my in box, I can spot all my important emails.

Microsoft Outlook has a ton of features. You can color code your emails. But last time I checked it was much easier to do in Eudora.

Either program will be a winner for you. Full-featured email programs allow you to create filters that automatically sort your email for you.

Eudora automatically highlights emails from my CPA to bring them to my attention. It filters orders into special mailboxes for me. It sticks mailing list unsubscribe requests into another email box. It deletes emails for me with certain words in the subject line or headers that indicate it's spam.

It's extremely easy to create message filters. I can't possibly fathom running my business without Eudora or a program like it.

I also set up stationary that allows me to send canned responses with just a click. Your email program is the lifeblood of your business.

Buy a good one and take time to learn it.

Operating your web business tip
Here's a simple time saver!
I have a virtual customer service rep who helps me manage my business.

Every day she listens to my voice mails, transcribes them and emails them to me.

Of course, when she can answer the question or someone just wants a call back, she does it for me.

In this business, you have to look for time savers. It's a lot more efficient to have someone listen to your voice mails, transcribe them, respond to the important ones and refer to you the rest to you than it is for you to do all that yourself.

I do the same thing with email. With the deluge of emails today, I recommend you train a staff member or virtual worker to sort through your email, delete the spam and pass on the action items to you.

This is just one tip from our complete system for managing and operating a virtual web business. Our manual can actually be used as a training manual for yourself or your virtual workers.

Web Business Operations Tip
How to handle refunds
Here's a fact:

Refunds are part of business on the Net. I don't care who you are or how great your product is. You will get refunds.

They suck. And if you read the comments inconsiderate people make, they can drag you down.

Our refunds as a percentage of our sales are small for a digitally-based product training business. Yet they exist. If your refunds are under 3%, that's terrific. If you're digital and they're under 5%, that's great.

If they're over 5%, try offering an unexpected free gift 4 days after the customer's initial purchase. And find out why there is a gap between the customer's expectations and what you're delivering.

Your refunds should be under 5%.

I used to respond personally to those who wanted refunds. But you know what? I realized one day that those people just wanted their money back. With few exceptions, they didn't have anything constructive to say.

If they do, we take note. So how do you handle refunds? You don't -- do it yourself. What you do is hire a virtual worker you can trust to do them for you. We handle refunds promptly and with courtesy.

Of course, the glitch is finding someone you can trust. In our highly automated virtual world, the old-fashioned things like trust and respect are not the virtues of many people.

The best way to select someone is via a referral from someone you trust.

If you'd like to expand your use of virtual workers, and/or operate the core functions of your business using trained staff, check out our web business operations training manual. There's nothing else like it.

Power Up Your Web Site Tip
Use "on-entrance" pops to get subscribers to your email opt-in list
Many web site owners have found they increase subscriptions to their ezine or mailing list by up to double just by using an "on entrance" popup.

When the customer enters your web site, a little subscription box pops up offering a free bonus for subscribing to your mailing list.

If you don't have an ezine, you can offer a short 5-part email course via a sequential autoresponder. By offering this, many site owners have found their site converts more browsers into buyers.

And that means more cash in your pocket. And less chance you'll end up on the "dot com" waste pile.
